School hatches new lessons on a life-cycle

BIRD-loving pupils at St Thomas’ CE Primary School in Bury have been learning about the miracle of life.

For they received an incubator storing eggs and watched as 18 chicks hatched.

The first chick hatched within 24 hours of arriving at the school in Pimhole Road and was named after headteacher Sheryl Farnworth.

The pupils looked after the chicks and decided to name them all after members of staff.

They have been learning about the life cycle of a chicken, keeping diaries to follow their growth, and linking the project with literacy, numeracy, science and design technology.

After staying at the school for two weeks, the chicks were taken to Pimhole Community Farm where they will be reared as free range chickens.

Mr Martin Van Hecke, Key Stage Two leader, said: “The children thought it was fantastic. It offered them something more practical and hands-on than their usual lessons. They went from watching an egg to seeing a chick hatch from it. The educational benefits were huge.”
