THREE worthy causes have been handed thousands of pounds by a charitable trust run by the Bury Times’ parent company.
The Gannett Foundation, set up by Gannett, the company which owns the Newsquest Media Group, including the Bury Times and The Bolton News, recognises charities across the country every year.
And this year, three local causes were given a total of more than £10,000.
Bury Cricket Club has been awarded £3,450 to buy an outfield mower and update other machinery at the club.
Some of the cash will also be spent on new coaching equipment for younger players.
Club chairman Les Horton collected his cheque from Lynn Ashwell, deputy editor of The Bolton News group, and said the new equipment was on order already.
Two Bolton charities were also given cash.
Harmony Youth Project, which provides young people with a wide range of creative activities, including dance, music and art, was awarded £3,392. It will be spent on specialist equipment to allow youngsters with disabilities to enjoy their projects.
A grant of £3,265 was given to disabled self-help group Good Companions for a new shed, greenhouse and other equipment for their allotment in Avenue Street, Halliwell.
Lynn Ashwell said: “We are delighted that again we have been able to help three local charities through the Gannett Foundation. We wish all the organisations well with their future projects.”
