New Army office welcomes recruits

THREE local lads have become the first soldiers to swear allegiance to Queen and country at the new Bury Army careers information office.
The British Army’s first recruitment office in the town has just opened its doors at the new Fusiliers Museum in Moss Street.
The opening was marked with the first three attestations: Kellan Collins, aged 16, will be joining the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers along with 19-year-old Kris Helliwell, aged 19, while Josh Burke, aged 16, will be joining the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
Senior recruiter Staff Sgt John Slater, who heads the new office, said: “It’s brilliant to see there is a real demand for a recruitment office in the region and that the young people of Bury are keen to come and talk to us about the career opportunities on offer.
“The first people to complete their oath of allegiance will always be a bit special for the recruiters here, but hopefully it is also something the three lads will always remember.
“I’m sure they will go on to have long and successful careers in the Army.
“They will need to complete their phase one and two training before going on to their regiments, which will not only challenge them mentally and physically, but will prepare them for life as a soldier.”
He added: “Potential recruits used to have to travel to our Bolton, Rochdale and Manchester offices, so we decided that because there is such a strong interest from the region, we would open our own office in Bury.
“We are based in the Fusiliers Museum because each recruitment office has its own character and usually its own link with a certain regiment. For us, we are proud to say that it’s the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.”
