Singer Rebecca wows the judges to win Powersound competition

TALENTED singer Rebecca Lake wowed the judges to be crowned the winner of this year’s Powersound competition.

The 16-year-old saw off strong competition in Friday’s final from 12 other young singers who had progressed through three heats.

She performed four songs in front of an audience at Radcliffe Civic Suite and received the highest marks from a panel of industry experts.

Rebecca sang: I’m Not Afraid of Anything from musical Songs From The New World; Ava Maria by Beyonce Knowles; I Am What I Am by the Jonas Brothers; and The Wizard And I from musical Wicked.

After being named the competition winner, she received prize money, a trophy, and a session in a recording studio.

Rebecca, who is studying a BTEC musical theatre course at college and comes from St Helens, said: “I’m amazed and shocked that I won, but I’m really pleased. I’m going to put the prize money towards paying to go to drama college in London.”

Following Rebecca was 17-year-old Jacobi Bagley in second place and Max Alexander, aged 15, who came third. The best newcomer was 11-year-old Daisy Hope.

The 10th annual Powersound competition will finish tomorrow with a battle of the bands contest.

Astrix, Loaded Deck, Ruin It For Everybody, The Versions, Blessed With Betrayal, and The Missing Link will perform from 7.30pm at Radcliffe Civic Suite.

Organiser Samantha Williams, duty manager for Bury Venues, said: “All the singers were fantastic and it was a brilliant night. I would have hated to be a judge because they were all so talented. I just wish Simon Cowell could see them.

“Hopefully the final for bands will be just as good. They will be playing different kinds of music and bringing a lot of fans with them. There should be a great atmosphere.”
