CREATIVE pupils from across the borough will benefit from a state-of-the-art classroom set to be built at Elton High School.
Bury’s planning control committee backed plans for the school to build a single-storey creative media suite.
It will house a dark room and top-of-the-range computers allowing pupils to produce and edit videos and graphics.
It is part of a boroughwide plan to give 14 to 16 year olds a more practical alternative to GCSEs in the shape of vocational diplomas.
Because it will be the only facility of its kind in Bury, youngsters from other schools will be able to study at Elton for a few hours a week.
A creative media diploma course began in September and is proving popular.
Deputy headteacher Kate Johnson said she is confident it will become even more attractive to pupils when the new facility opens next year.
She added: “During 2010 we expect to move into our bespoke creative and media diploma building, which will be independent of the main school, having its own gallery area and reception for visitors and students.
“Students and staff are excited about the new building and high tech resources which will provide further exciting and innovative learning experiences.”
The school also received permission for the building of a single-storey temporary classroom next to the existing John Pass building, where society and healthcare will be taught.
