Children aid new play area project

PLANS to build a children’s risk-play area have been submitted after more than two years of consultation.

Youngsters in Ramsbottom have been working with Bury Council’s Youth Service to design the site in Peel Brow.

Those behind the project want to develop land between Fern Street and Kenyon Street which they say is under-used.

If proposals get the go ahead, the site will be transformed into a natural play area inspired by the Tatton Park Flower Show.

Youth Services area manager, Dawn Cretney, said: “The aim of the project is to provide young people from Peel Brow with the opportunity to design and take pride and responsibility for their own public space, their own use and their community.”

The group visited the Tatton Park flower show in July, 2007 to get ideas for the site and liked one of the gardens displayed.

Residents had until Tuesday this week to submit their objections, and just one was received.

Dave Johnston, from Childcare and Extended Services, said: “There are goal posts in situ on the site, but the current condition of the land means it is very difficult for the children and young people to use the area for football or any other play activity.

“The increase in play opportunities will mean children, young people and families can access good quality play provision closer to their homes, in safe walking distance.”

The project aims to encourage risk-taking with traditional play equipment aimed at young people aged up to 13.

The site is managed by Bury Council’s Parks and Countryside department.

A planning decision could be made by the end of this month.
