International Women’s Day celebrated in town

A SERIES of events will be held across the borough next week to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The theme of this year’s event is equal rights, equal opportunities and progress for all.

It looks at how far women have come in the struggle for equality, peace and development.

Bury Youth Service, along with partner agencies, have organised several activities for young women.

From 6pm to 9pm on Monday, women aged 13 and over will be able to experience life around the world at the Phoenix Centre, in St Mary’s Road, Prestwich. Activities include tasting international food, belly dancing, listening to music and learning about nail art and junk jewellery.

Activities carried out by young women from past generations can be experienced on Wednesday by visitors to the Shuttle Centre, in Albert Road, Whitefield. This event aims to show what women were expected to do and the progress that has been made.

Women will be able to make plans for the forthcoming year during a special session at the Elton Centre, in Alston Street, Bury, from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, March 13.

During the week, a doctor from Fairfield General Hospital will visit Ellen Court, in Bury Road, Radcliffe, to give a talk encouraging women to think about their health. It will cover parental health, breast feeding, breast cancer and cervical cancer screening.
