Krishma loses her flowing locks to help pupils’ charity

A TEENAGER had her flowing hair cut for the first time in her life in a personal sacrifice to help victims of motor neurone disease.

Bury Grammar School pupil Krishma Kataria saw her locks shorn to her shoulders in a sponsored event to support her year group’s chosen charity.

The 14-year-old and her school chums are raising cash for Motor Neurone Disease Research.

Krishma and her fellow pupils adopted the charity, having heard how seriously the disease affects sufferers.

She hopes to have raised £300 with sponsorship from her family and school friends and the year group’s combined cash total could reach £3,000.

Krishma, a year 10 pupil, had her locks cut at Antony’s for Hair in Tithebarn Street, Bury, watched by fellow pupils and staff. She ultimately hopes to study medicine at university to become a doctor.

Bury Grammar School (Girls) headmistress, Bobby Georghiou, said: ‘I am very proud of Krishma. The generosity of her actions is all too evident. She has beautiful long hair and cutting it represents quite a sacrifice. It is very important in our school that we expect our pupils to be caring and kind as well as successful in their academic endeavours.

“Through their work for charity they learn not only the importance of compassion and understanding, but also more about the world in which they live. Krishma and all the girls in her year group who have worked so hard to support Motor Neurone Disease have our full admiration.”
