talented teenagers took part in Bury’s first dance competition for secondary Schools.

The pupils, drawn from nine Schools, performed a range of dance routines at the Inter-High Dance Contest, covering a variety of genres from contemporary street dance to jazz and tap.

Youngsters from Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom were judged the winners of the inaugural competition, which was staged at Elton High School and organised by the Bury Schools Sports Partnership.

Among the judges were Kimberley McNeill and Alexandra Scott, who are employed by Bury Council as dance development co-ordinators.

Miss McNeill said: “There have been competitions in many sports, but we’d never had one involving dance before.

“There are a lot of talented young dancers in Bury.

“Our aim was to get all the Schools together and to showcase their dancing in a friendly competition.

“The event meant that the pupils had something to work towards.”

The winning dance squad from Woodhey received an engraved shield and all 100 youngsters who took part were presented with a medal.

An audience of 300 watched the competition, which organisers said is to become an annual event.
