Pubs put their shirts on helping youngsters

TWO popular pubs are getting “shirty” to launch a new charity campaign called Project Fair Play.

The football-focused initiative aims to provide disadvantaged children in the UK and in South Africa — where the 2010 World Cup is being held — with first-class soccer facilities.

The Hare & Hounds in Bolton Road West, Holcombe Brook, and the Ainsworth Arms, in Bury and Bolton Road, Radcliffe, are staging a “shirts amnesty”. They are asking fans for their unwanted football shirts, especially children’s, to donate to South African youngsters.

The pubs also want to raise enough cash to build a new sports ground at a South African school and kit it out with “alive and kicking” footballs.

These soccer balls are made using African skills and leather and each carries an important message about HIV/Aids and malaria.

Ainsworth Arms’ pub manager, Alex Carswell, said: “Knowing how much our customers love football, we’re sure there’s going to be no shortage of old shirts coming out of the closet for the shirt amnesty.”

Hare & Hounds general managers Lynn and Andy Grant added: “Project Fair Play is set to make this year’s World Cup even more special for everyone at the pub.”
