A BURY police officer is at the helm of a special charity netball tournament to be held in memory of a colleague.
The event is being organised by Sergeant Cecelia Oakley in tribute to Chief Inspector Karin Mulligan who died after a battle with cancer last year.
Teams will travel from across the UK to take part in the competition at Bury Grammar School on Saturday, March 27. All money raised will be donated to Bury Hospice.
Chief Insp Mulligan served with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) for 28 years and rose from the rank of cadet to serve in various branches and divisions.
Sergeant Oakley, a longtime friend and netball team mate, who is based at Bury police station, said: “Karin loved netball and was a fantastic player. She was the goalkeeper for GMP’s netball team and Salford-based team Kestral for more than 20 years. During that time she won lots of competitions and trophies and I am sure this tournament will be a fitting tribute to my friend and colleague.”
To take part in the tournament or support the teams email cecelia.
