CAMPAIGNERS have made their move to stop Town Hall bosses introducing more parking charges in Prestwich.
Bury Council’s budget for the coming 12 months includes a plan to make £35,000 in parking charges at car parks like Fairfax Road.
They have not yet agreed how much motorists will pay to park there, but council leader, Cllr Bob Bibby, has said it will be cheaper than it is to park in Bury. Drivers, traders and councillors opposed the idea with some saying it would drive visitors out of Prestwich for good.
On their behalf, Cllr Trevor Holt handed in a petition of 700 names of people opposing the idea at the last full council meeting.
After the meeting, Bury South MP Ivan Lewis said the protesters must now turn their attention to ensuring charges are not brought in to other car parks.
“This is a disgraceful decision at a time when the council should be doing everything possible to support small businesses in Prestwich Village,” said Mr Lewis.
“My fear now is Fairfax Road will be a trojan horse for the introduction of car-parking charges in the rest of Prestwich.”
