Council bosses to prune energy costs

ENVIRONMENTALLY-friendly council bosses are to lighten their carbon footprint — and their bills to the tune of £7 million.

The savings will be generated if Bury Council achieves its target of a 35 per cent cut in its carbon emissions by 2014.

The local authority is now adopting a carbon management plan which will spearhead reductions in energy usage and efficiency improvements.

Schools in particular will play their part in energy saving as they already account for more than half of the CO2 from all council buildings. Other areas targeted are street lighting and vehicles.

Cllr Dorothy Gunther, executive member for environment and transport, said: “We aim to reduce wasted energy and use power as efficiently as we can.

“These actions are not only physical improvements to buildings and systems but there are large energy and CO2 savings to be made by changing the way we work and manage our workplaces “Failure to implement the carbon management plan could result in Bury Council needing to find another £8.7 million to fund its fuel costs in the next five years.”
