A DOCTOR, who has incurable skin cancer, will launch Manchester’s Race for Life this year in Heaton Park.
Val Coupes was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2002 at the age of 27.
She had surgery and was given the all-clear in 2007, but two years later the cancer returned.
The 34-year-old is now having treatment to prolong her life, but will not be cured.
She has been chosen as guest of honour for the North West’s flagship Race for Life due to her bravery, which means she will be starting the event.
Dr Coupes, who believes getting sunburnt as a child caused her condition, is passionate about helping others.
The paediatrician, who works at Halliwell Children’s Centre in Bolton, said: “Back then there wasn’t the awareness about the problems it can cause but there is now.
“Everyone thinks this kind of thing won’t happen but it certainly can. People need to be aware of the dangers and any changes to their skin.”
There will be three Race for Life events at Heaton Park, over the weekend of July 10 and 11. To enter visit raceforlife.org or contact 0871 641 1111.
