Images unveiled of new sixth form college

IMAGES of a proposed state-of-the-art sixth form college at St Monica’s High School have been unveiled.
The £6.6m complex will challenge students to get hands on — learning things like catering and hair design which they will be able to try out in the building’s public restaurant and salon.
The two-floor vocational centre is set to be partly solar powered and will also serve as a public gym and conference centre.
After the plans were presented to Bury Council this week, headteacher Frank McCarron said: “The building looks absolutely fantastic. We are so excited by the drawings. Up to 30 per cent of school leavers in Bury who are Catholic do not go on to further education and that is perhaps because the vocational subjects that stimulate them aren’t provided. This facility will fill that gap.”
If the council grants permission, the sixth form would be built within the school grounds on land at the junction of Bury Old Road and Scholes Lane, Prestwich.
It would open in September 2011, with room for 250 students.
In the plans, a spokesman for architect Cassidy and Ashton, which is handling the application on behalf of the school, said: “The new development should be seen as neither a school nor a workplace but somewhere in between.
“The new facility will provide students with the necessary skills to take out into the workplace after completion of their studies.
“Hospitality and catering, performing and production arts, sports and fitness, hair and beauty, media studies and IT and business studies will be taught.”
The building will also have a library, gym, computer suite, digital editing room, a theatre performance area and sports facilities.
It will also have a mock flat to allow students to learn domestic skills like cooking and cleaning, with special facilities set aside for children with special needs.
The council is set to make a decision on the proposals by June 2.
