Megan is on the way to recovery

A YOUNG girl seriously injured in a road smash is on the mend, her mum has said.

Megan Wightman was hit by an Audi A6 near the junction of Heywood Road and Rectory Lane, Prestwich, on March 7.

Passing black-cab driver Paul Mason gave the seven-year-old first aid and her mum said last week that his actions saved her life.

Paramedics took Megan to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital’s intensive care unit.

She was in a coma for four days, was fed through a tube and was breathing with the help of a ventilator.

But a week and a half after the crash, Megan, of Heaton Street, Prestwich, has regained consciousness and started to breathe unaided.

Her mum, Katie Wightman, aged 24, said: “She is doing very well and is on the mend.

“The doctors have said they are amazed how fast she has made progress.

“She is a real fighter.”

Katie, who has three other children, added: “She is eating on her own now and has been moved to a ward.

“The X-ray showed that she has broken a small part of her pelvis, but the doctors said that it will heal on its own in time.

“We are hoping to have her home after another month in hospital.

“The support we have had from friends and family has been amazing and I would like to thank them.

“Megan hasn’t started talking yet and we won’t really know how she feels about it all until she begins to talk.

“It is going to be some time before she is back at school, but the hospital has its own schooling area so when she is fit enough, we can get her in there for a while.”

Police spoke to the driver at the scene. but have made no arrests.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the incident are asked to call Greater Manchester traffic police on 0161 856 3573.
