FRESH fears have been raised over the long-term future of Radcliffe Civic Suite despite assurances the venue is safe.
Following the announcement that the previously under-threat hall will be taken over by a management company, some councillors have questioned the reasons and remit surrounding this move.
And one, Councillor Siobhan Costello, said she was worried the decision was just a “holding exercise” until the local elections and that the civic venue could ultimately close.
But council leader Bob Bibby has hit back at the claims and denies that Radcliffe Civic Suite’s future is in jeopardy.
Speaking at last night's full meeting of Bury Council, he said: “It is the most secure suite in the borough.” And he declared: “As far as I’m concerned, this venue is safe in the hands of the Conservatives.”
Cllr Bibby also disclosed that the local authority has received “a number of unsolicited expressions of interest” in managing Radcliffe Civic Suite.
Earlier, the hall and the Longfield Suite were subject of a Bury Council review and consultation into the future of their civic venues.
