Pupils suffer mystery illness on school trip

TOWN hall chiefs are trying to find out what caused seven pupils to suffer health problems on a school trip.

Four pupils from Cams Lane Primary School and three from Radcliffe Hall fell ill while attending a Crucial Crew hazard awareness day at Bury Interchange last Thursday.

Two were taken to hospital and returned home later that evening.

A Bury Council spokeswoman said: “We are aware that a number of children became unwell during the Crucial Crew event at Bury Interchange.

“Two children were treated by first aiders and paramedics on site before going to hospital.

“A number of others were either sent home with parents or returned to school with staff members.

“We have since been in touch with schools and parents to get an update on the children and most have reported that the majority of children have returned to school. “We are still investigating what happened so can't say anything definitive on the cause.”

A spokeswoman for Cams Lane Primary School said: “Bury Council is handling the issue on our behalf. We have written to parents informing them of what happened.”

In a statement, Radcliffe Hall Primary School said: “A number of our Year 5 pupils were taken ill last Thursday while attending a Crucial Crew event.

“First aid was administered at the time and two of our pupils attended hospital as an extra precaution.

“The rest of the Year 5 children returned to school and the two children who attended hospital returned to good health.

“We informed parents, the local education authority and health and safety officers about the event.

“We would very much like to thank the staff at Crucial Crew for the care and help given to our pupils.

“At present, we are unsure of what caused the incident, but we are being updated daily by the staff at Crucial Crew.”
