work is set to start on the creation of a dementia unit in Bury.

Brookdale Residential Centre in Chesham Crescent is to get 26 beds for people with dementia to add to the 52 general residential care beds it has now.

Bury MP David Nuttall toured the centre earlier this month and gave his thumbs-up to the expansion.

Brookdale was built in 1921 and opened as a residential home in 1988, providing day care, short-term care and respite care. The Quality Care Commission rated it “adequate” in 2009 and bosses have sought an improvement.

Construction is expected to begin in the next few weeks on the new dementia unit and is expected to take eight months.

The existing accommodation will then be refurbished and an orangery will be built outside.

Mr Nuttall said: “It is good news that they are investing money into our local economy.

“There will be work for a whole host of tradesmen when they start. It looks like the sort of place an older person would want to spend time in.”
