Asylum seeker freed from detention unit

AN ASYLUM seeker has returned to his Bury home after almost being deported to Cameroon.

Bernard Batey, of Kestrel Drive, was released on Friday from Colnbrook immigration removal centre, in Middlesex, where he had been held for nearly four weeks.

He was detained by officers from UK Border Agency after losing his fight to remain in the UK.

But a judge granted an injunction stopping his deportation just 24 hours before the flight and he is continuing his legal battle for asylum, along with his wife, Lydia Besong.

The couple have a new solicitor preparing a judicial review, which will be heard on Monday, October 17 at the High Court in Manchester.

The couple fled Cameroon in 2006, claiming they were persecuted for their involvement with the SCNC, a pressure group campaigning for independence for southern Cameroon.

It is alleged they were both imprisoned and tortured in Cameroon and Mrs Besong was raped by a prison guard.

Silly judge nobody.
As the man is an illegal migrant he should have been sent back to is homeland. Don't believe his story. It is makebelieve anyway!

So you're an expert on the case are you R'Marcus? Lets hope you're never persecuted, tortured or worse, we'll all think your making it up.

You sound like a certain Austrian circa 1939 Tommyh. What next, round 'em all up in to big camps? Your compassion is underwhelming. Considering our ancestors took over the world & made this THEIR motherland, I think you're a little misguided

While I tend to agree that money is going to people it shouldn't, Tommyh, genuine people like Bernard shouldn't be persecuted in any country. Having worked for the Civil Service, the amount of money owed by people overpaid benefits would blow your socks off. We're not a heartless nation & charity does begin at home but there does need to be common sense in place.

ok call me racist or a xenophobe i really dont give a **** anymore but its time we put our own country first.

i dont care about your colour creed or faith as long as your British. We should look after our own first. Let the governments of other countries look after their people.

We cant afford to do it anymore.

So you'll happily pay to feed, water & house people like Peter Sutcliffe, Ian Huntley, Ian Brady etc because they're British? Makes you proud eh?! FFS

no i would rather pay an executioner for those home grown scum. i want a return of the death penalty for serious crimes but that is a separate issue.

Stop trying to put a smokescreen over the issue being discussed. illegal immigrants and bogus asylum seekers should be sent back to the point of origin. i'd rather pay for their flight home than all the perks they get handed them at the moment.

Hang fire, you were the one that said 'i dont care about your colour creed or faith as long as your British'. Therefore you'd prefer child murders to innocent people who are being tortured, raped & expelled from their homes? My family are catholics, originally from Belfast until one of the factions made them all homeless after threatening to burn the house down with all 8 of them in. Cheers, I wouldn't be alive now if people like you had their way.

I was thinking along similar lines, about a separate issue, just this morning. Too many people who have the "send 'em back", "lock 'em up", "string 'em up" attitude to complex problems clearly aren't intelligent enough to understand the wider issues surrounding individual cases. Yes, there are people who take the P*ss and they do need dealing with appropriately - that we probably agree on. However knee-jerk, black & white clichéd responses to complex problems reveal more about the person ranting them than it does the subject of the target of their rants!

asylum refused, appeal dismissed, lower tribunal rejected, upper tribunal dismissed all at considerable cost-we could start by reducing the number of times an asylum seeker is told no before removal is considered or withdraw from the UN 51 Convention and accept an agreed quota from UNHCR, a number affordable. Until then bogus cases economically harm the UK and the will of the majority is ignored
