A CANNABIS farm worth an estimated £250,000 was discovered in a terraced house after a raid by Bury police’s drugs squad.

The rented house, in Raymond Avenue, Walmersley, contained more than 1,000 cannabis plants.

They were being grown in almost every room of the house using sophisticated hydroponic growing equipment.

Police said the house was 95 per cent full of cannabis and did not appear to be lived in.

They raided the home at about 7.30pm last Thursday after receiving information from the community.

No one was inside the house at the time and no one has been arrested in connection with the discovery.

The landlady, who asked not to be named, said she was shocked when police informed her.

She said: “It is devastating. I don’t know how people can do this sort of thing.

“I still can’t believe it — I keep thinking it can’t be true.”

Police have not yet spoken to the tenant and are now trying to find him.

One neighbour said: “Nothing exciting ever happens around here.

“It’s a respectable, nice neighbourhood with nice people. I’m horrified.”

Detective Inspector John Mazzolai, of Bury CID, said: “Thanks to information we received from the public, we were able to prevent a significant amount of cannabis hitting the streets and causing misery in the community.

“It is vital we continue to receive information from residents as it helps in our continuous fight against drug dealers. As this seizure shows, we will take positive action.”

Anyone with information about drugs in their area can call police on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
