BURY has become a safer place to live, with crime falling by more than one-third in the past five years.
New figures released by the police show there were 12,497 reported crimes in the borough last year, a reduction of 35.8 per compared to the 19,477 reports made in 2007.
The biggest decrease was in the amount of vehicle crime, which fell by 51 per cent from 2,855 to 1,398 incidents.
Burglaries fell by 47.5 per cent, from 1,436 to 754, and robberies dropped by 47.4 per cent from 365 to 192.
Reports of anti-social behaviour were also slashed by 44.5 per cent, from 14,797 in 2007 to 8,207 in 2011.
Chief Supt Jon Rush said: “These figures show we are succeeding in tackling the issues that people in Bury have told us concern them most. Through working with partners and our communities, we are helping not only to make them safer but importantly also, making them feel safer and less fearful of crime.
“The overall trend for the last five years shows that crime across the Bury area has reduced by nearly 36 per cent, which is almost 7,000 fewer victims of crime.
“Bury residents can be reassured that we will not be complacent in the coming year, but will continue to work to further bring down crime, make life difficult for criminals and help increase quality of life for everyone who lives or works in or visits our town.”
Between January and December, 2011, there was a 4.3 per cent fall in overall crime in Bury West and 2.5 per cent fall in Bury East.
In Bury West, burglaries fell 22 per cent from 100 in 2010 to 78 in 2011, robberies fell 23.1 per cent from 13 to 10, and anti-social behaviour fell 16.2 per cent from 661 to 554. The only increase was in vehicle crime, which rose 3.3 per cent from 120 to 124.
In Bury East, burglaries fell by 6.8 per cent from 191 to 178, robberies fell 21.6 per cent from 74 to 58, vehicle crime fell 26 per cent from 389 to 288, and anti-social behaviour fell 16.4 per cent from 2,889 to 2,416.
