AROUND 90 footballers took to the pitch for the second annual tournament organised in memory of two sports fans.

Fifteen teams went head-to-head at Play Football, in Market Street, Bury, for the chance to win the Paulo Franko Cup and raise money for Bury Hospice.

The winning team was Dogg Fighters United, led by captain Russell Shaw.

There were also attractions including a raffle, refreshments and a competition to name the teddy. The event raised £750 for the hospice, boosting the total amount raised by the Paulo Franko Trust.

Claire Casey-Gordon, of High Street, Walshaw, said: “It was great. We had a good range of teams and we were really pleased with the success. We will be doing it again next year and we hope it will get bigger and better.”

The trust was set up last year following the death of Mrs Casey-Gordon’s father, Paul Casey, and her father-in-law, Frank Gordon, who both died of cancer.

Mr Casey, of Cotswold Crescent, Walshaw, was treated by Bury’s hospice at home nurses, while Mr Gordon, from Gatley, was cared for at home by his family and local nurses.

As well as the tournament, a music night was held in Didsbury in May which raised £3,000 for St Ann’s Hospice in Manchester.
