A FRESH warning for shoppers in Bury to be vigilant from potential online scams while buying Christmas presents has been issued by police.

Officers say criminals increasingly rely on the internet to defraud unwitting victims, often asking for personal information or bank details in a bid to steal someone's identity.

They have urged the public to not click on links that people are unsure of, and make sure that web pages are secure before submitting personal details.

It is also advised that people buy items with credit cards, as this offers customers greater protection, and use secure sites such as PayPal when paying individuals, instead of transferring money to them directly.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is offering a range of internet advice for shoppers in time for Christmas.

Detective Superintendent Mark Smith, GMP’s lead on cyber-crime, said: "To help keep online shoppers safe over the festive period we’re running a Google ad which directs them to the internet safety pages of our website, and advice leaflets are being handed out at internet cafés and computer and phone retailers.

"We understand that shopping online is often the most convenient way to buy things, but it’s also a convenient way for scammers to target victims, and following the safety tips above can help you avoid being defrauded at any time of year, not just Christmas."
