POLICE patrols have been stepped up in both Bury and Salford following a terrorist attack on a Jewish supermarket in France.

The Jewish security charity Community Security Trust requested that patrols be stepped up in Jewish areas across the country after hostages were taken at the Hyper Cacher kosher store in Paris on Friday.

Greater Manchester Police agreed to increase patrols in Bury and Salford during the Shabbat period from Friday night.

Around 20 people were taken hostage and four people killed by Amedy Coulibaly, who was later killed when French police stormed the building in the Porte de Vincennes region, in the east of the capital.

The siege came at the end of a bloody week for Paris which started with a massacre at the Charlie Hebdo magazine on Tuesday and saw at least 20 people killed.

A CST spokesman said: “Although there is currently no known link to the UK we believe it is important for us to ensure that security across the Jewish community is at an appropriate level this Shabbat.

“We are in contact with police forces across the country to ask for increased patrols in Jewish areas over Shabbat.

“This has already been agreed with the Metropolitan Police Service in London and Greater Manchester Police and we are grateful for their support.

“Please report any suspicious activity and anti-Semitic incidents as soon as possible to CST and the police. In an emergency, always call 999 first.”
