A BURY councillor is embarking on a mammoth cycle from Bolton Town Hall to Downing Street.

North Manor Cllr James Daly, who is running to be the new Conservative MP for Bolton North East, will spend five day battling the elements and biking 200 miles to the Prime Minister’s front door.

The father-of-two is fundraising for Bolton Hospice along the way, and will be joined by friend and chairman of Greenmount Village Community group, Alistair Waddell.

The challenge will kick-start on Monday March 2, and Cllr Daly said he was keen to raise as much money as possible.

He said: "I’ve learned more about hospices and the way they are run over the past few months, and they have to raise mind boggling sums of money to stay open, so I want to highlight that.

"It is also to show that there are political people who just want to try and do things which are non-political, to try and benefit their communities.

"It’s not just about standing up and parroting the literature — I want to go the extra mile for the community group.

"One of the things about the challenge is that the vast majority of the route is off-road, so I’m also hoping to show the benefits of cycling as well."

Cllr Daly and Mr Waddell will have to average around 70 miles a day, and will be staying with friends and Tory colleagues along the route.
