A CAR became impaled on railings after a driver lost control of his vehicle in Bury Town Centre in the early hours of the morning.

The 26-year-old driver was knocked unconscious in the crash and was taken to Salford Royal Hospital.

His head injuries were initially thought to be serious, but scans later revealed that they were not life-threatening.

The crash happened at about 5am when the 26-year-old driver lost control of his Vauxhall Corsa after driving down Manchester Road.

The car narrowly avoided hitting the historic Jubilee Fountain at the junction with Manchester Old Road but became suspended 3 feet off the ground on iron railings.

Firefighters performed an emergency extraction on the driver and at first they struggled to gain any response from him.

Crew manager Tony Wilson said that by the time the ambulance arrived, the driver was starting to gain conciousness.

The area of road was closed so that a police investigation could take place, but is has now been reopened.
