A YOUNG mother and her baby had a lucky escape after a grill pan caught fire.

Firefighters were called to a blaze in Holme Avenue, Brandlesholme, at 11.10am yesterday (Wednesday).

The 21-year-old woman had been cooking bacon and, after making her food, had forgotten to turn off the grill, which then caught ablaze.

She and her partner, aged 25, managed to get their 18-month-old baby out of the house but had to cut through the kitchen, where the cooker fire was raging, to get to the back door.

The woman’s father, aged 45, lived nearby and arrived to put out the blaze, but in doing so suffered from smoke inhalation.

When firefighters arrived, they assessed the man for injuries and gave him oxygen, but he declined further hospital treatment.

Steve Wilcock, watch manager at Bury Fire Station, said: “We would advise everybody that if there is no life at risk, it is unnecessary to try and tackle the fire yourself.

“We do not want people to put themselves in danger.”

Firefighters spent about 30 minutes making the scene safe and removing the cooker, which was destroyed. The house has been left with light smoke damage throughout.

Mr Wilcock added: “The family had to go through the kitchen, past the fire, to escape the house. This is another safety point – we always advise people to have keys accessible near the front door.”
