A FIVE-year-old boy had to take a trip to the fire station last night after getting his finger stuck in the stand of a basketball net.

Barney Ainsworth, of Windsor Road in Bury, got his finger wedged in the hole used for the basketball pole after playing with the childrens toy at home.

The youngster was taken to Bury Fire Station by his dad Mark where fire crews had to use tools to cut the weighted stand off his finger.

Tony Wilson, watch manager at Bury Fire Station said: "We got a call about 7 o'clock last night from a dad who said his son had got this basketball weighted stand stuck on his finger.

"We gave them the option to come to their house or they come to the station but I think he was a bit embarrassed by it all so he chose to come to us.

"We used tools that we would usually use if someone had got their finger stuck in a ring, to get it off him.

"It was really wedged in.

"We had to saw the thing to pieces in the end to get it off, but he stayed chirpy and even asked his dad would he be able to fix the toy when they got home.

"Once we had got it off him he got on the back of the fire engine and got to sit in it and help one of the firemen out.

"He had a great time, I thoroughly expect him to get his finger stuck in something else so he can come back."
