ARTWORK created by schoolchildren is featured in a new exhibition at Bury's Fusilier Museum about the experiences of North West children during the Second World War.

Boys and Girls of the Blitz, which embraces the stories and experiences of local people who were children during World War Two, has been launched following months of research by the team at the museum.

During the summer, five local volunteers shared their stories with pupils from Holly Mount Primary School in Holcombe Road, Greenmount. Together with local artist Cat Jessop, the youngsters produced artwork which represented them during the Second World War. The artwork was included in the exhibition, along with other wartime items from the collection and costumes for children to try on for themselves.

At the launch, those who contributed were among the first visitors to cast their eyes over the exhibition. There was also a vintage toy craft session and characters in costume.

Jenny Mutch, learning officer at the Moss Street museum, said: “It has been a great pleasure to work on such a fascinating exhibition and gain a real insight into what it was really like to be a child during the Second World War. All the children who have taken part in the project have thoroughly enjoyed their contribution and we look forward to welcoming many visitors in the months to come.”

Joyce Elliott, senior volunteer at the museum, added “It was absolutely brilliant to be able to share my story and experiences of war with the children. I feel very proud to have played a part in the putting together of this fabulous exhibition.”

The Boys and Girls of the Blitz exhibition, which is open until next Spring, is included in the standard admission prices of £4.95 for an adult and £3.95 for children and concessions.
