Holcombe Hill was alive with the sound of pounding feet as the final Fill the Hill event came to a breath-taking conclusion.

Two fun runs took place, with more than £2,000 raised for Bury Cancer Support Centre, as dozens of runners joined up for the 5k event which started in Holcombe Village and the children's course, which began at Peel Tower afterwards.

The Fill the Hill campaign began in May in an attempt to unite those who wanted to support, fundraise and donate to the charity so the centre can expand its opening hours and meet increasing demands.

Events, which have also included kite flying and a teddy bears picnic, have proved a huge hit with supporters and there are now plans to bring the scheme back next year.

Centre spokesman Sue Hyland said: "It was a really great way to finish off our summer events for this year. The Fill the Hill campaign has been fantastic for showcasing our work and raising awareness about what we do in the community.

"As well as raising money, which has been wonderful, we have had the chance to speak to people about what we do. The atmosphere has been absolutely wonderful every time, and luckily we've had good weather too.

"We are hoping that it can make a comeback next March, but in the meantime we have a winter programme of events as well."

The centre is now hoping to attract a base of regular donors and new volunteers to continue their work.

She added: "Because we don't have any kind of central funding from anywhere, every penny we need has to be raised.

"We hope that if we can get a good group of people donating to us regularly that will be a step forward."

The support centre was established more than 12 years ago, and last year moved to a new permanent base in Bolton Road.
