AN emotional Victoria Derbyshire fought back the tears as she marked the completion of her treatment for breast cancer.

The broadcaster, who grew up in Turton and was born in Ramsbottom, was speaking in a video diary, which she has been keeping since her diagnosis 10 months ago.

Victoria says she hopes that the treatment has been successful, and that she now plans to move on with her life.

She said: "On July 31, 2015, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"One mastectomy, six sessions of chemotherapy, 30 doses of radiotherapy later, I feel like this could be a fresh start.

"It's Wednesday, May 25, and I'm done. I'm done. That was my last radiotherapy session.

"30 sessions, five days a week for the last six weeks, and its finished. Wow, can't believe it. Gosh.

"So happy. I am actually happy, despite these tears.

"And hopefully that it is for cancer treatment forever, if all goes according to plan.

"I want to say to you right now, if you are going through cancer treatment, or you are about to go through treatment, I'm sending you all my love and strength. Take it, have it. Just keep going.

"It's time to crack on with the rest of my life."

In addition, Victoria, a former Bury Grammar pupil, recorded her experiences during treatment in her video diary, and said the possibility of the cancer returning had fostered in her mind.

She said: "I'm sure this is completely normal and everyone who's ever had a cancer diagnosis will think this — I am thinking about what if this cancer comes back."

After completing her treatment, Victoria must take the drug tamoxifen every day for the next five to 10 years to stop the cancer from coming back, but the drug can have side effects including dizziness, headaches, cramps, weight gain and changes in mood.

But the TV presenter remained positive, adding: "Obviously I never want the cancer to reoccur, I never want to go through chemotherapy again ever, I just do not want it to come back... I just want this to have been a blip and get on with my life, my kids' life, my partner's life, my family's future."
