CROWDS flocked to the annual Affetside Boules and Bake Off competition.

Organisers were faced with disaster when they woke up to find that one of the gazebos had been blown down and twisted by the heavy rain.

But the weather didn't put off the organisers or the visitors as despite the dark looming crowds and the thunderstorms that were forecast the crowds turned up.

The French food and wine was flowing and the competition was high in the boules competition as 32 adults and 16 juniors fought it out, earlier this month

The heat had been rising in local resident's kitchens too as they created their masterpieces for the third Great Affetside Bake Off.

Steve Murphy and Steve Richardson battled it out in the nail biting final of the senior boules competition with Mr Murphy emerging victorious taking home the much coveted trophy.

While Danielle Alderson of Turton Road won the junior prize for the second time beating defending champion Sam Carroll in the final.

Joanne Wilcock, Affetside Society chairman, said: "It was a great success particularly given the dodgy weather. Everyone had a great time and it was a super event.

"Everyone threw themselves in to it baking some great cakes and getting involved with the boules competition.

"It was great fun and extremely well supported by the whole community."

The winner of the junior bake off was Julia Shuttleworth with her chocolate and strawberry ginger nut cheesecake.

Sam Carroll took second place with hit Smartie cake and third place went to Jennifer Meadows with her tasty fridge cake.

All of the cakes were sold off after the judging to raise funds for the village.

The next event in Affetside is the annual summer barbecue on Saturday July 9 on the village green from 5pm.

Funds will be raised for the upkeep of the Affetside Millennium Green.
