DAVID Nuttall has expressed his delight at Britain’s decision to leave the EU.
The Conservative MP for Bury North, who has been a long-term supporter of the leave campaign, said he was “very pleased” with the result.
He added that Brexit voters should thank David Cameron, who has announced he will step down as Prime Minister, for giving them the chance to have their say.
Mr Nuttall said: “I’m not gloating today and I never do in politics. I have often been on the losing side of arguments and it is nice to win one today.
“I’m very pleased to have heard the Prime Minister say that the views of the people must be respected and that means we will be leaving the EU.
“David Cameron has always said he is going to step down at some point and he has decided that it would be better in the long-term interests of the country for us to have a different leader.
“We must not forget that it is thanks to David Cameron changing the position of the Conservative Party on whether to hold a referendum that we have been able to take this decision.
“Millions of people should say thank you for giving us the chance to have our say, and that was something I have always argued for.
“I have always said ‘Let’s see what the people think’, and it turns out that the country agrees with me.”
All the reaction to the UK's decision to leave the EU
Bury voted in favour of Leave by 54 per cent to 46 per cent, and was the first authority in Greater Manchester to declare a result.
He added: “It’s important that there is now a period of continuity and stability. I would advise people not to pay too much attention to the volatility in the markets – they are always like that, it’s the way they operate.
“What really matters is that we concentrate on what is ahead of us, and that is negotiating new trade arrangements with Europe and we now have the freedom to go out and trade with the rest of the world.”
