HOLCOMBE Brook Primary School pupils have appealed to the new Prime Minister – to get children back to school.

As Theresa May started in her new position, the pupils were working on a project called Send my Friend to School which aims to get more children who are living in countries affected by war, natural disaster and emergencies in to education.

The project is a global campaign to encourage world leaders to do more to get all children in education.

This year the whole school got involved following the success of the Year 3/4 class participation last year.

Teacher Casey Lynchey said: "It was great to do it with the whole school this year. The children made messages and we delivered them to MP David Nuttall to take to the House of Parliament.

"The children are so passionate about the need to give these children an education and provide them with a safe place to learn and give them hope for the future."

In the UK, the campaign seeks to increase community awareness of the state of education internationally and generate the political will necessary to ensure the UK plays an active and effective part in efforts to secure education for all.

During the project the children created paper rucksacks symbolising the journeys made by children who have to leave their homes and schools.

Messages were added to rucksacks to tell Mr Nuttall what they thought world leaders should be doing to help the millions of children who are missing out on an education.

The hope was that these messages would then be passed on to the new Prime Minister.

Nicola Cadbury, Education Campaigns Manager for the Send My Friend to School campaign said: “Education is a basic human right for all children but in the middle of destruction, violence and instability, a safe place to learn can be a life saver. We are delighted that pupils at Holcombe Brook Primary School have written to MP David Nuttall about the importance of education in emergencies. Last year almost 5,000 schools got involved and spoke out for every child's right to go to school. We are expecting MPs to be inundated with thousands of these paper rucksacks covered with important messages!"

The project is run by the UK coalition of the Global Campaign for Education which is a global organisation working to ensure quality education for all children, with members in over 100 countries.
