A GROUP of fraudsters have been targeting elderly residents in Bury.
They are convincing people they are police officers, bank employees or members of a financial authority investigating a crime where the victim's bank details have been compromised.
They are also asking victims to withdraw large sums of cash to handover in person because they cannot trust the local police as they are involved in the fraud.
Det Insp Martin Hopkinson, of GMP's Fraud Unit, said: "These men are targeting vulnerable people in the community to swindle them out of money.
"A police officer will never say that you can't speak to us about any crime. This is a tactic used by fraudsters so the crime remains undetected and the money is lost.
"We would urge anyone with concerns or who may have information to contact police."
Police are warning residents about the crime and asking anyone with information to contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
