BURY directors have attempted to ease concerns after the football club was served with a winding-up petition.

A statement, released by the board, assured supporters there was nothing to worry about off the field and appealed for them to continue with their support ahead of Monday's home derby against Bolton Wanderers.

It was revealed yesterday HM Revenue and Customs had issued a winding-up petition and a date for the hearing had been set for Monday, November 21, at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

"The club is confident the matter will be resolved and will operate as normal in working to make sure that we keep moving forward," read the club statement.

"The chairman (Stewart Day) is still focused on the club and its future and this incident re-enforces the need to press ahead with the proposed ground relocation, so that we are not solely reliant on the club as the primary revenue source.

"As always, we will carry on regardless and apologise to any of our fans that may be concerned about the club, but rest assured that there is nothing to be worried about off the field and please keep supporting the team on the field during this campaign."

Bury served with fourth winding-up petition of the year

It is the fourth winding-up petition served by HMRC against Bury FC this year.

On the three previous occasions – in January, April and June – the petitions were lodged after the club missed the date set for payment of its tax bill and were later dismissed after it settled its debts to HMRC.

The club's statement added: "Over recent years, HMRC have taken a robust stance in their actions towards us and other football clubs.

"HMRC appear, by their actions, to be intent on winding up a football club and sadly, as a result of this, we have dealt with a number of petitions in recent times, more often than not for tax which has just fallen due for payment.

"Indeed, this petition has been advertised when the tax it relates to is less than a month old and had been agreed to be paid this week.

"The club confirms that it will deal with this petition and our lawyers at Turner Parkinson LLP have been instructed accordingly."
