YOUNGSTERS welcomed a 21st century Florence Nightingale to school last week.

Children in Year Two at Peel Brow School have been learning about the founder of modern nursing as part of their topic this term.

To mark the lessons they were treated to a visit by Mel Wood, a nurse who told them all about nursing today.

The pupils asked all manner of questions including how they treat patients and how clean the hospital is.

Louise Hughes, aged six, said: “I enjoyed it when nurse Mel came in to speak to us. She told us all about the hospital where she works and how she helps people.”

Teacher Carol Parker said: “The children were really interested in looking at the differences between modern-day nursing and the nursing Florence Nightingale was practising.

“They all agreed they would like to be treated in a modern hospital and said they were glad nurses and doctors worked so hard to help us.”

The children were also given some hands-on experience, using each other as patients and tying bandages.

Headteacher Danny Mellor said: “We like to give children lots of opportunities to learn about different things as well as working on core subjects such as Maths and English.

“This is another activity that really goes to show that Peel Brow School is a lovely school to be at and I’m so proud of all the children and staff.”
