A BRAVE disabled boy's story has been shared as part of a new campaign to raise funds for a children’s charity.

Eight-year-old Levente Kerek has a rare genetic muscle condition and needs a lightweight seat to swap between wheelchairs.

The Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children is calling for help from the public so they can provide for Levente, from Bury, as well as many more disabled children in the North West.

Levente, who suffers from myotubular myopathy, has a hi-tech electric wheelchair for use outside his home, but it is too big to fit indoors so he is constantly swapping from one piece of equipment to another.

He needs a specialist seat that can be switched between his manual and electric wheelchairs, so his postural support is seamlessly maintained to help prevent additional health issues.

Levente’s mum Nikoletta Veres said myotubular myopathy is a life-limiting condition, and a wheelchair is vital for her son’s mobility.

She said: “Levente has a large electric wheelchair which he uses in school, but his bedroom isn’t big enough for it so we use a manual chair at home.

“A lightweight seat that we can easily transfer from one wheelchair to the other would make a big difference.”

Now Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children is looking for "local heroes" who can help them make this happen.

The charity already has £531 towards the vital piece of equipment, which costs £1,593 in total – leaving £1,062 to fund.

The charity’s CEO, Sheila Brown OBE, said: “We need donors and fundraisers who want to really make a difference, helping us transform Levente’s everyday life.

“We are also currently working with 29 families in Greater Manchester and 22 in Lancashire who all urgently need specialist equipment.

“The combined need currently stands at £58,436 – £33,389 for Greater Manchester and £25,047 for Lancashire – and we are continually receiving new applications.

“The equipment they need is all essential for their children’s everyday lives, and the situation will only get worse as statutory services narrow the range of support they offer.”
