A MOTORIST has suffered serious injuries after a motorway crash.

Emergency services were called to a crash on the M66 yesterday evening.

Police, fire and ambulance were called to the scene between junctions two and one northbound at 7.20pm.

The crash involved a silver Mercedes Benz, which was entering the northbound carriageway when it broke down at the end of the slip road.

The driver put the hazard warning lights on and was waiting for recovery when it was involved in a collision with a black Vauxhall Astra.

Officers attended the scene and although road closures were in place, the motorway has now reopened.

A police spokesman said that the driver of the Astra, a 32-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were taken to hospital. The man remains in a serious condition.

Firefighters made the scene safe as paramedics treated the casualties.

Police are appealing for witnesses of the collision to come forward.

Police Constable Anthony Pye of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “While our investigation continues, we have a man in hospital who is being treated for very serious injuries.

“We need to fully understand how the cars came to be involved in a collision with one another and the events leading up to the collision.

“I’m appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision, or to anyone who saw the vehicles prior to the collision, to get in contact with my team.

“If you were in the area at that time and may have dashcam footage, we’d also like to hear from you.”
