VISITORS to Bury Museum can enjoy a trip down Memory Lane and delve into the Bury Times archives.

Bury Museum and Archive has created a homage to film photography with Back to the 1990s – Images from the Bury Times.

All the images featured in the display, which will be updated regularly, have appeared in the Bury Times and Radcliffe Times, just before film was replaced with digital images in newspapers, with a variety of subjects being showcased.

Archives Assistant Wendy Gradwell said: “We wanted to show people that the archives is not just about preserving and displaying records/images from long ago — it’s just as important to preserve and learn about records from our more recent past.

“These images are important to us because they were the last film images to be used in the Bury Times – digital replaced film soon after. We are so used to seeing digital images on our screens and devices, we thought it would be good to let our visitors see what ‘real’ prints look like.”

Former Bury Times chief photographer Roy Bolton, who has visited the exhibition, said: “It is nice to see them on display and I recognised a few I took in the 1980s!

“The images are so clear and black and white was a much better medium for newspapers because you get better contrasts and, unlike colour, it leaves a lot to the imagination.

“Unlike digital photography, when you can check you have got the right image, you had to compose the shot in your mind, take the picture, and you wouldn’t know the result until the film had been developed.

“You had one go to get it right so you made sure you got it right. You only had 36 shots on a roll of film and you did not have the time to fire off several rolls to make sure you got the shot and you would have had the editor on your back about the cost of developing!”

The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturdays from 10am until 4.30pm. It closes for lunch between 1pm and 2pm.
