LABOUR’S candidate for Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister after claiming new analysis shows the Government plans to slash school budgets across the region.
He says almost all schools in Greater Manchester will be worse off with some facing cuts of more than £1million over three years including Derby High School, Bury, which he says may lose £343,156.
According to the National Association of Headteachers the new Government funding proposals will mean the redistribution of a dangerously depleted pot.
Mr Burnham says the Government’s plans will hit some of the most disadvantaged parts of Greater Manchester the hardest.
Speaking yesterday at Prime Ministers Questions Mr Burnham said: “If you’re a working-class boy, you’re less likely than anyone in Britain to go to university.
“I would like to ask the Prime Minister how on earth cutting the budgets of these schools can do anything more than make this particular injustice a whole lot worse?”
After Prime Minister’s questions Mr Burnham said that the cuts will lead to teacher redundancies and bigger class sizes at schools.
And he added that he will work with other local MPs and councillors in the coming weeks to launch a campaign across Greater Manchester to support schools against the proposed funding cuts.
