A COUPLE from Bury are celebrating their Diamond Wedding anniversary.

Bill Humphreys and Mary Ingham married 60 years ago at Pits o' th' Moor Methodist Church on Saturday, March 23 1957.

Mrs Humphreys, aged 81, said: "It was gorgeous, we had a lovely day, it was sunshining nearly all day."

The pair lived in Lathom Street in Bury after they were married before buying a new bungalow in 1966 in the Ladyshore Estate in Little Lever, where they lived for 40 years.

They moved to Huncoat near Accrington to be nearer their daughter Dilys Day and grandchildren Lucy, aged 12 and Hugo, aged 8, who live in Sabden, Lancashire.

Mrs Humphreys said: "We chose a new apartment in Huncoat as it meant we could still easily get to Bolton and Bury where we had friends and family, but at the same time we were only 10 minutes from our new grandchildren."

The couple will be celebrating with family and friends old and new at Red Hall Hotel in Manchester Road, Walmersley where they also celebrated their Golden Wedding.

Mrs Humphreys a former factory worker and cashier said: "We met outside a chippy! He was out with his mates and I had been to the cinema.

"It was a good few years ago, I was 18 when I met him."

The pair met outside Tompson's Chippy, The Rock, they got to know each other going to the cinema and out for drinks.

Speaking about their long marriage, she said: "You have to help one another and do what you can for each other.

"It has it's ups and downs and you do get a bit fed up at times but all in all we have done very well.

"We just look after one another."
