PUPILS broadened their horizons trying different traditionally gendered professions.

High school pupils from Rochdale and Prestwich attended the Bury College Challenging Stereotypes Event, getting a taste of a variety of professions usually dominated by one gender.

The event was part of National Apprenticeship week which encourages pupils to start thinking about different career options.

James Flanagan and Amy Whittaker, both aged 15, of Wardle Academy, Birch Road, Rochdale, tried their hands at hair dressing.

James said: "Today has been a great eye-opener and I discovered I really enjoy hairdressing, which is something that I have never tried before."

Amy explored a range of barbering techniques and said: "Today I have been shaving a dummy’s head and cutting designs into the model's hair.

"I have really enjoyed the day and I would be interested in a career in this industry."

The taster sessions offered girls the chance to try barbering, interactive media and games design, business and sport while, the boys tried travel and tourism, hairdressing and health and social care.
