A SCHOOLGIRL who died four days after receiving a cervical cancer jab did not die as a result of the injection, a coroner has heard.

Shazel Zaman, aged 13, received the HPV injection at the Derby High School on April 13, 2016, and was admitted to Fairfield Hospital four days later after reporting suffering severe headaches, vomiting and dizziness.

However, Melanie Newbould, a paediatric pathologist at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital told the inquest at Rochdale Coroner’s Court that a post-mortem examination had ruled out the injection as a cause or contributory factor to her death.

She instead said that the cause of death was likely to be a cyst deep within the brain, which had led to a cardiac arrest.

The court heard how upon arrival at hospital, Shazel was assessed by Dr Yasmin Woods, a junior doctor who had only been working at the hospital for two weeks, who measured her blood sugar levels, breathing, and body temperature, all of which were normal.

Shazel, of South Bank Road, Bury, was then sent home the same afternoon, despite a family member reporting to doctors and nurses that she had collapsed twice while she was at the hospital.

Upon returning home, she was put to bed, and an hour later was found unconscious with no pulse.

She was taken back to hospital where she died three hours later.

Dr Woods, who no longer works at Fairfield, told the inquest that she allowed Shazel to be discharged because she had been reassured by those more senior than her within her department that the girl was fine, and believed her to be suffering from a stomach infection.

Before discharging Shazel she phoned Dr Wasim Asif, a locum paediatric registrar working for Pennine Acute NHS Trust and based at North Manchester General Hospital, for reassurance.

The inquest heard that Dr Woods informed Dr Asif of the results of the tests she had carried out, however, failed to mention the fact that Shazel had collapsed, as she "did not want him to think the patient was being dramatic."

Dr Asif told the court that had he been informed of Shazel collapsing then he would not have recommended her discharge.

Day two of inquest into the death of Bury schoolgirl Shazel Zaman

Coroner Lisa Hashmi said that expert evidence had shown that a CT scan would have revealed the cyst.

The hearing continues tomorrow morning.
