BURY FC are pioneering a new cashless payment system, the first of its kind in this country.

The club’s away shirt sponsor, tappit, provides cashless experiences at sports events, festivals and other entertainment venues across the globe, and is now implementing a cashless system at the Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane.

Starting with Saturday’s home match against Doncaster Rovers, supporters will be able to use the Bury-branded NFC-enabled cards at four of the club’s concession stands: the 1885 Suite; Starkies Restaurant; the Social Club; and the Retail Shop.

The prepaid tappit card will allow fans to tap and pay, and aims to cut queuing times.

Fans can sign up for the card for free at the club's social club as well as at the main reception.

Funds can be loaded on to a tappit device via a debit or credit card transaction, as well as in cash.

Bury FC commercial director, Matt Caren, said: “We’re hugely excited to bring new technology to the club. Offering our fans the chance to go cashless at Gigg Lane is such a positive move for us.

“tappit is becoming much more than a shirt sponsor, partnering with an organisation that has this expertise gives us the chance to improve the match day experience for our fans. It also helps us find out more about the behaviours of our supporters and learn how best we can communicate with our fans moving forward.

"Fans can still use cash. However, we believe that going cashless at sporting events is the future and we’re proud to be working with our partner tappit in making the Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane the first cashless football stadia in the country."

tappit CEO, Rob Groombridge, added: “When we first spoke to Bury about sponsoring the club, we discussed taking the stadium cashless and were delighted to find the club is so keen to embrace new technology.

“This is the first step in Bury’s journey to becoming the UK’s first cashless stadium, leading the way in payment innovation within football. We look forward to giving Bury fans a great cashless experience for years to come.”
