A man has died after a car crashed into a wall in Holcombe Brook.

The Vauxhall Astra crashed into the wall at the junction of Bolton Road West with Longsight Road near the Hare and Hounds pub.

Emergency services were called out shortly before 6.15am and the 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are appealing for information or camera footage following the incident.

DC Diana Dyer-Barron of GMP's Serious Collision Unit, said: "My thoughts are with the man's family at this very difficult time, who are being looked after by specially trained officers.

"The man was driving from Ramsbottom, so people on their commute may have seen this car as it travelled towards Bury.

"We're asking for anyone who saw the car, or who has dash-cam footage from around the time the collision happened, to please share it with us."

Following the incident, road closures were in place on Holcombe Road, Longsight Road and Bolton Road West.

The roads reopened at 1pm.

Bury Times:

Paula Hitchen lives above Hoysters bar in Bolton Road West and witnessed the aftermath of the crash.

She said: "I heard the crash. It happened at around 6am and the crash was so loud I thought someone had gone through the shop window.

"It felt almost like the impact made the floor move.

"I've been here two years and this is the second incident to happen in that time. This is quite a busy road."

In the past two years, two other major crashes have happened just yards from where this morning's crash happened.

In April 2015 a driver had to be cut free from a car after a collision at the junction of Longsight Road near the Hare and Hounds pub.

Then in August last year mother-of three Clare King was left paralysed and brain damaged after a driver smashed into her car while trying to evade police.

Lewis Rigby was jailed for three years and nine months following the high-speed crash near the junction with Longsight Road.

This morning North West Ambulance Service rapid response vehicles and an ambulance attended the incident.

Police remained on the road with officers and investigators combing the scene until roads reopened.

Meanwhile local school children were ushered on foot around the edge of the scene.

Drivers travelling both into Bury and Bolton were affected as well as people trying to get into Ramsbottom via Holcombe Brook. Traffic turning around at the cordon also created further problems with congestion during the rush hour.

Anybody with information about the collision should call police on 101 quoting incident number 271, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
