A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital after being cut out of her car following a three-vehicle crash.

The 61-year-old suffered a broken leg as a result of the incident in Edenfield, at 9.30am yesterday.

A 35-year-old man was also taken to hospital with a bleed on the brain, and another woman, aged 48, suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters from Ramsbottom, Rawtenstall and Rochdale responded to the crash.

Police, issued a witness appeal following the incident in which they said a red Mercedes Sprinter van was travelling eastbound on Rochdale Road when it was involved in a crash with a Jaguar.

A Vauxhall Astra, travelling behind the Jaguar, was also involved in the crash with the Mercedes.

Police closed the road for five hours to allow accident investigators to attend the scene.

Blue watch manager at Ramsbottom, Ady Tonge, said: "We were there around two hours.

"We provided first aid to one female casualty while waiting for the ambulance service to arrive.

"In conjunction with a doctor, I formulated a plan for how best to get the woman out of the Jaguar.

"We had to make the car safe because it was hanging over a three-metre drop into a field.

"A Tactical Rescue Unit from Leigh held the car in place while we removed the doors and roof to get to the casualty.

"The firefighters at Ramsbottom wish the casualties a speedy recover."
