A TALENTED school pupil is making a name for himself after his comic material saw him star in a competition final at the Palace of Westminster.

Thanks to his wit and humour, Charlie O'Hara made it all the way through to the grand final of the 'Voice Box' school joke contest, held at Speakers House in London on April 25.

The Year 3 Old Hall Primary School pupil was whittled down to the final 25 of more than 5,000 competition entries.

Deborah Ainscoe, headteacher at Old Hall Primary School, said: "I am pleased and proud that Charlie's joke was selected to represent Old Hall Primary School at this prestigious event.

"All the children in school took part and a special assembly was created involving comedy film clips and jokes told by children and staff.

"It has raised awareness of the importance of speech and language communication for all children."

During his visit, Charlie had the opportunity to meet and speak with James Frith, MP for Bury North, who was there to support him.

The budding creative was presented with a certificate and bag of prizes after going before a panel of judges.

In 2016, parent Mike Croston helped to set up and organise the school participation in the event, and joined the school to judge the finalists.

Voice Box is an annual joke competition for schools that is designed to raise awareness about the fun and importance of communication.

The scheme is jointly run by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists( RCSLT) and The Communication Trust ( TCT).
