No changes to youth service says council leader

NO changes will made to the youth service in the next 12 months and anything changed after that will only happen after full consultation.

That was the assurance given by Bury Council leader Bob Bibby to a packed public gallery at the council’s Executive meeting last night.

Before the meeting, more than 100 youngsters protested outside the town hall against proposals to cut £200,000 from the youth service from April 2010.

At the meeting, Cllr Bibby said: “I want to make it clear that we will do nothing to do the service in the next 12 months and nothing has been decided about what will happen after that.

“The council has never consulted on anything for 12 months before and that it was what I am doing for the first time with this issue. Everyone will have their say and we will do what is right for service users.”

Meanwhile, the Executive accepted papers which, if backed by the Full Council on Wednesday, February 25, would see a council tax increase from April of at least 4.49 per cent.

But that figure does not include the increase required by the fire and police services, which last year accounted for a 0.4 council tax rise.

If that happens again this year, the overall increase will be 4.89 per cent, which would affect the bands in the following way.

Band A: Current cost: £891.56 Increase: £43.59 New cost: £935.15

Band B: Current cost: £1,040.14 Increase: £50.86 New cost: £1,091

Band C: Current cost: £1,188.74 Increase: £58.12 New cost: £1,246.86

Band D: Current cost: £1,337.33 Increase: £65.39 New cost: £1,402.72

Band E: Current cost: £1,634.52 Increase: £79.92 New cost: £1,714.44

Band F: Current cost: £1,931.70 Increase: £94.46 New cost: £2,026.16

Band G: Current cost: £2,228.89 Increase: £108.99 New cost: £2,337.88

Band H: Current cost: £2,674.66 Increase: £130.79 New cost: £2,805.45.

Full Council will also vote on a proposal to increase council house tenants’ rent by an average of six per cent from April. That includes those who rent garages from the council.
